The Fuma Conspiracy:

The "ryoo" is an old unit of Japanese currency, an oblong gold coin. At the time this film was made (1987), 1,000,000 ryoo roughly equaled US$7,000,000. If it were made at the time of this writing (Dec., 1994), the same 1,000,000 ryoo would be worth about twice that amount.

Legend of the Gold of Babylon:

"A dance of bills" this song Rupan sings is a take-off on an old children's song. The phrase in question speaks of "a dance of rabbits" in the original.

"Zantetsuken cannot cut flowers" Zantetsuken, the name of Goemon's katana, literally translates as "Iron-cutting Sword," or "Sword That Cuts Iron."

"What a magnificent sight!" "Zekkei ka na" is a quote by the original Ishikawa Goemon upon seeing a view of Kyooto from a temple.

Two of the main characters are fictional descendants of actual historical figures. Inspector Zenigata is the seventh-generation descendant of the famous Edo-Period detective, Zenigata Heji, and Ishikawa Goemon is the thirteenth-generation descendant of the notorious samurai-turned-bandit Ishikawa Goemon, who, when caught, was boiled in oil for his crimes.

Aa kakehiki dekinai honkisugite
Ai kamoshirenai kaze ga sasayaku
Whimsical, cute, spoiled...
I've heard the talk.
A bouquet, caviar, a limousine, dancing...
A pick-up phone call.
C'est la vie... I'm a
little bored of life.
Suddenly, we touch glasses,
and you say I'm like you.
A smile, clouded eyes...
they've touched my heart.
Ah! I'm unexpectedly falling in love.
Just who are you?
I love you so much it makes me dizzy
and I've always been the cool one, too.
Oh, I'm not used to doing the chasing in love.
The stars are shimmering with a feeling
that I'll get hurt.
Whimsical, cute, spoiled...
So long as I have you...
Bouquets, caviar, limousines, dancing...
I won't need any of that.
Oh, I can't scheme or bargain. I'm far too serious.
This may be love... the wind whispers.

A rainy night split with neon earrings,
Downtown shining like onyx.

All at once, you said you're leaving this town.
I said that's it then, to your voice on the phone
and hung up for the night.

Love isn't always honest,
playing out the distance between us,
being a little disillusioned.

MANHATTAN JOKE...
MANHATTAN JOKE...
I'm kidding around.
MANHATTAN JOKE...
MANHATTAN JOKE...
I can't keep my heart from falling apart.
Alone to the airport
in a hurry.

A yellow cab whose left door doesn't open...
Queens Bridge, where the blues play sad
on the radio.

In a grey coat out of place in August,
I left my apartment taking nothing with me.
Sunglasses concealed my heart.

I look down, nothing I can say,
with eyes that are wet,
even though the rain has stopped

MANHATTAN JOKE...
MANHATTAN JOKE...
I'm being serious.
MANHATTAN JOKE...
MANHATTAN JOKE...
Hold me tight, darling.
Wait for me,
until the final flight.

MANHATTAN JOKE...
MANHATTAN JOKE...
I'm kidding around.
MANHATTAN JOKE...
MANHATTAN JOKE...
I can't keep my heart from falling apart.
Alone to the airport
in a hurry.
Song of Babylon
Lyrics: Unknown * Music and Arrangement by
Oono Yuuji * Performed by Kawai Naoko
How many miles to Babylon?
Three score miles and ten.
Can I get there by candle-light?
Yes, and back again.
If your heels are nimble and light,
You may get there by candle-light.
